Step Outside of the Lab
Tuesday, October 14 / 8:00–9:30 p.m. ET

The collaborative, service driven relationship between the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and the Department of Nursing at the University of Kansas Hospital has matured and strengthened over the last several years. A number of significant initiatives serve as sound examples of the dedication to service and quality patient care shared by both departments. A Nursing – Laboratory Liaison committee serves as one formal structure supporting this collaborative work.  Improvements in the area of phlebotomy service, electronic order entry screens, patient identification and specimen labeling, patient satisfaction, troponin test turn around times in the emergency department and lactate test turn around times are sound examples of the work of this collaborative partnership. Additionally, teams collaborated to develop a focused unit secretary educational classes and phlebotomy training sessions for nursing staff.  Finally, leveraging the expertise of both disciplines, several programs and projects including policy development have been collaboratively accomplished including the point-of-care testing program, implementation of the pneumatic tube system, critical values and monitoring of key outcome measures.
